A Journey of Growth: JT’s Story of Confidence and Independence

After graduating from high school, JT and his family faced uncertainty about what the future would hold. JT wanted to work, but his family worried about whether he was ready and how he would succeed in a workplace setting. With the right support and opportunities, however, JT began building confidence, independence, and the skills needed to thrive.

“UCP trainers have helped me by giving me support whenever I need it. And, they let me try something on my own, and if I can do it, then they let me do it on my own. But if I need more support, they will give me more support,” said JT.

To help JT succeed, UCP arranged an assistive technology consultation and used grant funding to provide the tools and training he needed to meet job expectations. This included a computer, mouse, laptop bag, and study materials, along with quick accommodations whenever new barriers arose. When transportation challenges threatened to interrupt his progress, employment program staff stepped in to ensure he could continue getting to work consistently.

“It makes me feel good because I was really worried that I would not fit in here. But my first week, I was like, I really LOVE it here. My parents have seen a lot of growth in me, and I’ve made a big step. It makes them feel very, very proud that I’ve come out of my comfort zone, and that they are happy to see me come to work and be the happiest person I’ve ever been,” said JT.

JT’s journey is a powerful example of how personalized support, encouragement, and opportunity can help individuals grow beyond their comfort zones and achieve meaningful independence.
