Mike Cinami with his mother Diane Deedy

This year, I’m reaching out not just as the Board President of UCP of Eastern Connecticut but as a proud parent. My journey with UCP began while my son Mike was still in school, and I was looking for fulfilling volunteer opportunities. I was drawn to UCP because of their incredible mission, but what I found was so much more—a community of caring, compassionate individuals dedicated to empowering people with disabilities and their families.

Through volunteering, I saw firsthand the impact of UCP’s services. When I needed support for my son, UCP was there for us. Their caring staff provided flexible, critical support services that met our family’s personalized needs. Thanks to their dedication and your generous support, I’ve watched my son achieve milestones that once felt out of reach.

This is how your family has helped my family through the stages of our lives.

Mike Cinami

UCP focused squarely on my family’s individualized issues and needs. One of their primary concerns is that Mike’s disability lends itself to isolation, so his skillful caregivers looked for and provided many creative ways for him to connect to his friends, peers and our community, which has stemmed the loneliness he used to feel. This helps both of us, since my son depends on me exclusively.

The services his direct support professionals provide boost his daily living skills to support each of us in different ways. He’s experiencing positive outcomes that support our day-to-day lives. Mike has taken on cooking projects, he makes his own coffee and lunches. And he has formed responsible, basic routines that foster independence like putting away his belongings and doing his own laundry.

UCP takes an innovative approach to helping the people they serve give back to the community. This has helped Mike grow more independent in ways I never imagined possible. I’ve watched him give back to his own community through various volunteer projects, which brings him a great sense of accomplishment.

All of UCP’s vital services have fostered successful outcomes for us.

Today I’m proud to say that my son has developed a strong sense of pride and purpose at work, at home and in his volunteer efforts. Without your support, none of this would have been possible.

The more I work with UCP, the deeper my appreciation grows for the difference they make. I was honored to be invited to serve on the Board of Directors, and today, as Board President, I am passionate about ensuring that families like mine can continue to rely on UCP for hope and support.

Your generosity makes this all possible.

UCP’s work is funded by people like you—people who care deeply about fostering inclusion, growth and independence for individuals with disabilities. Every donation provides essential services that change lives, creating opportunities for personal growth and connection.

As the holiday season approaches, I hope you will join me in supporting UCP.
